RED BARN HISTORY

THE RED BARN’s Story

The original barn that stood on this very footprint, was built in 1889 and was part of an operating dairy farm on farmland that stretched almost to the Thames River. It was known as the Mumford Dairy, the Mitchell Dairy and Michael’s Dairy (yes, the current Michael’s Dairy Ice Cream Shop on campus was a part of the farm, too!)

In 2006, Mitchell College acquired the barn and through the generosity and hard work of many associated with the College and New London, the new Red Barn was re-built on the same spot as the original and re-opened in 2018. You can see the signatures of many of those that helped rebuild in the reclaimed wood used in the entrance way to the barn.

The profits from each rental of THE RED BARN go directly towards supporting our students and Mitchell College’s mission of celebrating and developing the power of unique minds.
